The Colorado Avalanche has acquired defenseman Sean Walker and a fifth-round draft pick in 2026 from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for forward Ryan Johansen and a first-round selection in 2025.

The Avs' 2025 first-round pick for Walker is top-10 protected. This means if the Flyers get a top-10 pick in next year’s NHL Draft, the first-round pick to the Avs will move to 2026.

The Flyers reportedly shifted their attention to trading Walker on Wednesday morning when On TSN’S Darren Dreger reported that progress was made in contract talks with defensive teammate Nick Seeler. Frank Seravalli added the information that the blue liner has been placed on Injured Reserve and is out week-to-week after blocking a shot against the St. Louis Blues on Monday. This could explain why a trade will be difficult and an extension more likely to take place. Seeler carries a cap hit of $775,000 on his current deal.

Walker will finish the last season of his four-year, $10.6 million contract with a $2.65 million cap hit in Colorado. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

In 63 contests with Philly this season, Walker has put up six goals and 22 points, averaging 19:35 of ice time a night.

He joined the Flyers as part of a three-team trade in the summer. The Los Angeles Kings received Kevin Connauton and Hayden Hodgson from the Flyers in that transaction.

Walker signed in LA as an undrafted free agent ahead of the 2018-19 season and spent the first five seasons of his career there.

This is a third team for the 29-year-old blue liner.
