Flames sign goalie Dustin Wolf to a two-way contract

Is this the team's starting goalie next season?

Trevor Connors

UPDATE: Wolf speaks!

This just in, the Calgary Flames have signed goaltender Dustin Wolf to a two year contract worth $850,000 per season. Interestingly enough though, the deal has a two-way clause in the first season, meaning that Wolf will be making a lesser salary if he plays with the team's AHL affiliate Calgary Wranglers instead of the Flames.

So, if Wolf sticks with the Flames he'll make his full $850,000 salary, but he'll make only $275,000 in the AHL with a $375,000 or more total guarantee.

From salary cap resource PuckPedia:

The 23 year old Wolf played just 17 games with the Flames last season, positng a 7-7-1 record with a 3.16 goals against average and a .893 save percentage. With the Wranglers though he was stellar, posting a 20-12-3 record with a 2.45 goals against average and a .924 save percentage.

With Jacob Markstrom now out of the picture in Calgary, all eyes are on Wolf to take the next step. He'll most likely split time with backup Dan Vladar, that is if GM Craig Conroy doesn't add another veteran to his team's roster before training camp opens.

For a bit of a taste of Wolf, check out these highlights from last season:

There's no doubt that the kid has the skill and drive to be a top NHL goaltender, but it remains to be seen if he can dial in his consistency over the long grind of a full NHL season.
