Finland upsets Canada in controversial end to World Championship.
Did the refs blow it?
The International Ice Hockey Federation's World Championship tournament has come to an end with Finald defeating Canada by a score of 4 - 3, but it is a tournament final that will not go down without controversy.
Already there has been a good deal of outrage on social media after a controversial penalty call by the on ice officials during the overtime frame of the final game. With the game on the line in sudden death overtime, Canadian defenseman Thomas Chabot would find himself in the penalty box after he was called for a hooking penalty at the worst time imaginable.
As you can see from the clip below, it is a little difficult to blame the officials for calling this given that Chabot was indeed draped all over him.
The controversy though stems from the fact that it was only Chabot who was called for a penalty on the play, with many feeling that the man who was hooked by Chabot, Finnish forward Hannes Bjorninen, should have also earned a trip to the penalty box. Although you can just barely see it before the replay above cuts off, during the game Bjorninen could clearly be seen putting his hand around Chabot's skate and dragging the Canadian defenseman down to the ice with him.
The argument is that the result should have been offsetting minors, rather than a power play for the Fins.
As I said there has already been quite the reaction on social media, including from public figures in the hockey community like TSN's Jeff O'Neil:
TSN's Steve Warne described it as a "brutal" call.
Others also expressed their disappointment with the decision by the officials, a decision that a vocal segment of the hockey community appears to believe was made in error.
In spite of the controversy and the disappointment for the Canadians, it was an incredible moment for the Finnish players and their fans on home ice.
And much to their credit, the Canadian players have handled the loss with class, even staying out on the ice as the very same officials mentioned above received awards for their performance in the tournament.
