The Montreal Canadiens could look to move out some of their players ahead of the March 7 trade deadline, and one name that keeps popping up is Jake Evans.
The versatile depth forward can play multiple roles and log crucial minutes on the ice and has garnered the interest of many contenders, and the Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli has even reported that the Washington Capitals almost acquired Evans because the deal fell apart.
“Believe the Caps were the team that tried to acquire Evans last summer at the Draft in exchange for a second-round pick, and that makes some sense. They’ve tried to fill that 3C role this year with Lars Eller, but Evans would be a better fit.”
While the Caps could take another shot at Evans in the coming weeks, Seravalli also believes that the Toronto Maple Leafs, New Jersey Devils, Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets could be the ones who get the deal done.
The insider believes Washington did not offer a pick that was good enough to land Evans, as he writes that “if you want to acquire Evans, you’re going to have to give up a solid pick to do so.”
Through 51 games this season, Evans has picked up 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points. He certainly has the phone buzzing in Montreal though Habs general manager Kent Hughes may not be willing to part with Evans just yet. The Canadiens are currently 4 points of the second and last Wild Card playoff spot in the Eastern conference and the GM might want to wait some more before he revisits the Evans’ trade.
