Evander Kane rushed back into surgery, forcing setback in recovery!

The Oilers provided this unfortunate update on Friday. More details below:

Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane is back under the knife. According to the team, Kane underwent knee surgery on Thursday, which will force him to pause recovery from the abdominal surgery he had in September for four to eight weeks. The club also stated that this procedure is unrelated to the previous procedures Kane underwent.

Insider Chris Johnston adds: “If he’s unable to return this regular season, the team can continue to use his $5.125M cap hit in LTIR.”

Kane has yet to play with the Oilers this season after undergoing surgeries to repair two hernias, two torn abdominal muscles and both abductors on September 20th. While fans imagined it would take quite a bit of time to see Kane suit up in Edmonton, insider Kevin Weekes reported earlier this season that Kane should return from injury in “early 2025”.

It does not appear to be the case any longer with this additional surgery.

Kane recorded 24 goals and added 20 assists in 77 regular season games with the Oilers in 2023-24, adding four goals and eight points in 20 playoff contests until Edmonton reached Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

This has to be a tough blow for the Oilers, though it could mean that Kane will be added to the roster later on in the postseason, once his $5.125M annual hit can be added to the team’s cap without any repercussions for going over. This could be a blessing in disguise.
