While life has gotten better for star defenseman Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks, some things still pull at the heart strings when thinking about everything he and his wife Melinda went through. In March 2018, the Karlsson’s baby boy Axel was stillborn. The pair grieved the loss of their son while dealing with an online bullying situation, all while the Ottawa Senators were rumoured to be trading their then-captain. Axel would have been Karlsson’s first child. The trade finally happened later that summer with the Karlsson starting a new life in California.
They welcomed a daughter in October of last year, but on Thursday, a painful reminder of their loss of Axel came to surface as Melinda Karlsson published a post on Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.
“To those that know it’s not just the pain of what happened, it’s the pain of what never will. Your parents are missing you little angels. Today and every other.”
Karlsson posted her message again, adding a heart to echo her emotions on the devastating lost of their son.
We are sure that Karlsson’s teammate forward Evander Kane also had a special thought for his daughter Eva, who was stillborn at 26 weeks in early 2019.
“It definitely makes you realize what’s important,” Kane said at the time. “Every minute, you had different emotions, different feelings. My wife, seeing what she went through, it was harder on nobody else but her.”
We have a thought for everyone out there dealing with the loss of a child. We cannot imagine anything worse…
