Don Cherry sends Remembrance Day message on Sunday night.
Don Cherry wants to talk about the poppy on the night before Remembrance Day on Monday.
We are one day away from the 5 year anniversary of Canadian icon Don Cherry being unceremoniously fired by Rogers from his position at Hockey Night In Canada where he was the long time host of Coach's Corner, and Don Cherry wants to once again talk about the poppy.
Cherry was of course famously fired for going on a long rant about the poppy in 2019, one in which he implored Canadians to purchase a poppy to honor the sacrifice made by Canadian soldiers in World War 1, World War 2, and various conflicts throughout the history of Canada. If you haven't seen the now infamous rant that led to Cherry being fired, you can see it in the short clip below:
In spite of the fact that it cost him his position on Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry has never issued an apology and in fact continues to implore Canadians to purchase a poppy in honor of Canada's fallen soldiers to this very day. On Sunday night, Cherry released a podcast in which he made it clear how important it was to him to continue to show support for the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy today.
"I just want to talk about the poppy," said Cherry on his most recent podcast Sunday night. "I just wish everybody would buy a poppy. One poppy. Give a dollar."
Cherry was reminded by his son Tim that it had been 5 years since he had been fired for the original rant, and Cherry barely seemed to have noticed the time go by.
"5 years ago?" asked Cherry sounding surprised. "Seems like a long time ago, 5 years eh?"
Regardless of whether or not you agreed or disagreed with how Cherry expressed his concerns over the poppy back in 2019, I think we can all acknowledge that supporting our veterans is a genuinely good gesture. I encourage everyone to buy a poppy in honor of our fallen soldiers on Remembrance Day, it seems like the least we can do given how much they sacrificed.
