On Thursday, it was reported that the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League were suspending their best player Jordan Dumais for breaking the team’s code of conduct during an off-ice incident. He has been suspended for five games, which began on March 14, which means he will miss the remainder of the regular season and the first game of the playoffs.

More details have emerged on Friday morning and fans and pundits have found out that Dumais has been suspended after being charged by police for driving under the influence earlier this month.

The Halifax Regional Police spokesperson Const. Paul DesRochers gave the following details in a statement about the incident that took place on March 1. Officiers stopped a vehicle in the 2000 block of Brunswick Street in Halifax for a traffic violation around 2:20 a.m. They observed signs of impairment from the driver and arrested him.

According to TSLH, a source revealed that Dumais was the lone passenger in the car and that he would have gone twice the limit allowed by the Canadian Criminal Code. Contrary to previous rumours however, drugs were not involved, there was no accident on the road and no one else was on board.

Dumais, is a 19-year-old promising prospect in the NHL, is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date to face charges of operating a conveyance while impaired and operating a conveyance with a blood alcohol level of over .08.
When asked about the DUI charge, Mooseheads communications officer Scott MacIntosh said “that is all we have to say”, hinting at the aforementioned statement from the team.

Dumais is a third-round pick of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets. He won MVP honours in the 2023 QMJHL season where he racked up 140 points and led the league in scoring. The Blue Jackets responded to the suspension and charge by saying that they are aware of the situation and “take this matter very seriously.”

“We are supportive of the actions taken by his junior club and will have no further comment at this time,” he said.

This is not the start you want to have with coming into the NHL, especially with the level of talents Dumais can bring to a rebuilding team like Columbus. He will need to gain their trust and work on his reputation before even playing in his first NHL game.
