Devils' AHL GM trades his own son for Future Considerations!

“But, Daaaaaaad! I was gonna be on the powerplay!”

Trevor Connors

AHL Utica Comets GM Dan MacKinnon just put his son in his place.

MacKinnon just traded his own son defenseman Will MacKinnon to the Cleveland Monsters.

Did Will forget to take out the trash on garbage day or something?!

There's got to be more to the story here!

The 24 year old MacKinnon has just four assists in 42 games with the Comets this year, so I can't imagine he'll be missed too much in the team's lineup.

The elder MacKinnon is an accomplished executive with over a decade and a half of experience with the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins' organizations.

From his team profile:

MacKinnon, 47, enters his sixth season with the New Jersey Devils after spending the previous ten seasons (2006-2016) with the Pittsburgh Penguins, including the last seven as director of player personnel. He served in that role for the 2016 Stanley Cup Championship team. In that position, MacKinnon oversaw all of the Penguins’ professional and amateur scouting operations in North America and Europe. He spent two seasons as director of professional scouting, and joined the organization as a scout in 2006. From 2000-2006, MacKinnon was with the Nashville Predators where he worked with Shero, serving as a professional scout (four years) and scouting coordinator (two years). He has also worked in the league office for the American Hockey League and for the Mississauga Ice Dogs (OHL).

Prior to his professional career, MacKinnon served as an assistant coach for Ohio University’s hockey team, where he worked to receive a master’s degree in Athletic Administration. MacKinnon played three seasons of Canadian College hockey, one with Mount Allison University (AUAA) in 1994-95 and two with the University of Waterloo (OUAA) from 1996-98. He played junior hockey in Pembroke (CJHL, 1991-93) and Kingston (MetJHL, 1993-94).
