Devastating update from Jaromir Jagr

Is this it for one of the greatest players in hockey history?

Has Father Time finally come for the ageless Jaromir Jagr?

At 52 years of age, the legendary player continues to play professionally in his homeland of Czechia after having last suited up in the National Hockey League briefly for the Calgary Flames in 2017-18. Right now, he's playing for Rytíři Kladno of the Czech Extraliga, which he owns.

However, he announced that he suffered a torn hamstring that could potentially sideline him for the next six weeks - and at his age, it could be a career-ending ailment.

"I have something to tell you," Jagr announced. "I know you’re asking why I’m not playing in any pre-season games. Unfortunately, I was injured. I know that you supported me a lot and because of you I will not give up and I am training anyway. Back as soon as possible. Thank you for your support."

Jagr would then go on to discuss his meeting with team trainer Pavel Kolář and express his own disappointment in himself for training too hard.

"When I talked to the physiotherapist Pavel Kolář about the fact that I would like to properly train, he warned me not to do anything that my body is not used to," he said. "Of course, I didn’t listen to him... I went for a run. Not the sprints I used to do uphill, but normally straight. But I put weights on my ankles and tore my hamstring.

That was about five days ago. Pavel said it would be three to six weeks. We’ll see how it heals.

The worst part is that I’m mad at myself. I was preparing, I dropped a lot (of weight) and felt pretty good on the ice. Now it has stopped again, so I’ll have to start from the beginning.

But I’m not one to screw it up when I’ve put so much into it. The very next day I went to do things that didn’t hurt. However, skating is very important and I won’t be on the ice for three to six weeks. Maybe it won’t be that long, we’ll see. When I walk, it doesn’t hurt.

I’m curious what Pavel will say to me when we meet again."

In 15 games this season with Rytíři Kladno, Jagr has four assists.

Jagr's 1,921 points in the National Hockey League are the most by any European-born player in League history. He currently ranks 2nd overall in Pittsburgh Penguins franchise history in points behind only Mario Lemieux, and he was recently honored by the franchise by having his iconic jersey No. 68 retired and hanged in the rafters at PPG Paints Arena.
