Craig Berube creates a new line after loss to Ottawa.
The head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs quickly puts an end to his experiment.
Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube was clearly trying to light a fire under his forwards this past weekend when he shuffled his lines ahead of a clash against Atlantic Division rivals the Ottawa Senators, but it would now appear as though Berube did not like what he saw from his experiment at all.
On Monday morning, things had very much returned to status quo for the Maple Leafs as Berube once again shuffled his lines, although this time things much more closely resemble the standard line combinations the Maple Leafs have deployed over the years.
That being said there is a new fourth line that Craig Berube did address in some comments to the media, a line that features Steven Lorentz, Scott Laughton and Calle Jarnkrok.
Here is how the full lineup looked during today's morning skate:
Knies-Matthews-Marner
Holmberg-Tavares-Nylander
McMann-Domi-Robertson
Lorentz-Laughton-Jarnkrok
McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-Carlo
Benoit-OEL
Woll
As you might expect, Berube was quickly asked about his decision to go back to something more standard off the heels of a loss to the Ottawa Senators, and Berune indicated that he simply hadn't been thrilled with what he saw on Saturday.
"I didn't love the energy levels the last couple of games to be honest with you," said Berube on Monday.
Berube explained that his reason to return to a more familiar look stemmed from both past success as well as his desire to create a new line combination.
"Just succes that we've had and the chemistry that they have," said Berube of returning to his standard lines. "I wanted to create a line with Laughton and Lorenz and Jarny, just more of an identity line, a checking line."
