Controversy erupts after lengthy double review in USA-Germany game at WJC!
This was a long one in order to make the right call. Two reviews were needed and fans believe they got it wrong! Watch below:
In the first period of the game between Team USA and Team Germany on the first day of the World Junior Championship, the officials were quite busy.
Midway through the frame, James Hagens appeared to score the first goal of the contest, however, the referee standing behind the net immediately called it off, adding that video review was needed to determine if the puck has crossed the line. Hagens remained calm and confident, knowing he had beaten goalie Nico Pertuch.
After review, it was indeed clear that Hagens had scored on Pertuch, and Team USA was awarded the goal.
However, right after the horn went off, Team Germany challenged the goal for goalie interference. The officials went back to the review and took a long time to see how Cole Hutson seemed to collide with Pertuch’s pads, causing him to spin out of control right before he was beaten by Hagens.
After the review, the referee went back to center ice to announced that the goal was good and that Germany was getting penalized for delay of game for the failed challenge…
Already a bit of controversy at the WJC as many fans watching the game though this one was coming back and the score at zero for both teams. The goal only boosted the American club, getting their scoring streak into motion.
