Connor McDavid gives a clear answer about his future with the Edmonton Oilers

“It's a question I'll only answer once...”

Trevor Connors

The moment that Leon Draisatl signed an 8 year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers we, the fans, received a bit of a hint as to what the team's future looks like.

The Draisaitl signing is huge, not only because it keeps Draisaitl in Edmonton for the net 8 seasons, but it indicates that captain Connor McDavid is likely sticking around too. McDavid's contract expires in the 2026 offseason and he's eligible to sign an extension in January, 2025. But, you have to figure that there's no way that Draisaitl commits to Edmonton for 8 years if he doesn't think McDavid is along for the long-haul. There must have been some indication from McDavid to Draisaitl that they're both in things for the long-run.

Today, McDavid was asked about his future with the team and he didn't beat around the bush. He told reporters that he's only going to discuss the issue once and then he'll move his focus on to the upcoming 2024-25 season.

Here's what the captain had to say earlier today:

"It's something that I'm not going to worry about... it's a question that I'll answer once. I'm worried about this year, I'm worried about being ready for the season, both myself personally and the group. That's where my focus is at, not on anything else. All that stuff takes care of itself, it's not something that I'm worried about.

- Connor McDavid

You hear that, Oilers fans? Nothing to worry about here...

Of course, you never know what will happen until pen hits paper but in the meantime I can hear Oilers fans sending their prayers up for a lifetime McDavid contract.

I also find it interesting that Oilers media asked McDavid for his thoughts on the city of Edmonton and committing to the city, not just the team, long-term.

Check this out:

Some light-hearted jabs in there, which I love...

But come on, Edmonton media...

There's nothing quite as desperate as an Edmonton media member trying to get people on-board with the idea of living in Edmonton. Actually... Winnipeg's media may be just as guilty, but either way it's a bad luck.
