The Montreal Canadiens appear to have completely lost faith in one of their goaltenders, this despite a recent outburst from Habs head coach Martin St. Louis when he was asked about that very subject.
According to an official announcement on Saturday, the Canadiens have placed goaltender Cayden Primeau on waivers for the purpose of sending him down to the American Hockey League's Laval Rocket. Primeau has had a terrible start to the regular season, recording a 4.70 goals against average and a .836 save percentage over 11 appearances this season. Primeau has just 3 wins over those 11 appearances.
The news comes as no surprise with St. Louis confirming on Friday that things were headed in this direction for Primeau.
Many have felt that the Canadiens, and more importantly St. Louis himself, had lost faith in Primeau with Primeau being used extremely sparingly throughout the month of December. Primeau has appeared in a total of just 2 games this month, once on the first of December against the Columbus Blue Jackets where he recorded a .828 save percentage and once again against the Pittsburgh Penguins on the 12th of December in what was a catastrophic performance in which he allowed 3 goals on just 7 shots and recorded a .571 save percentage.
St. Louis stormed out of a press conference when he was asked about his faith in the backup goaltender just one week ago.
Primeau is currently in the final year of a 3 year deal that carries an average annual value and salary cap hit of $890,000 which could make him a potential target for teams that are in desperate need of a backup goaltender. A team like the Ottawa Senators for example have suffered a number of injuries in goal and Primeau could be a relatively cheap option to claim on waivers, assuming they believe that he can bounce back somewhere else with a fresh start.
Stay tuned for moe on this developing story.
