Bruins GM Don Sweeney makes a move, dumps Stanley Cup champion on waivers
The desperation from Sweeney and the Bruins is reaching new levels.
This just in, the Boston Bruins have placed veteran forward Tyler Johnson on unconditional waivers. This means that if/when Johnson clears waivers (as is expected) he'll have his contract terminated by the team.
From the Bruins:
The 34 year old forward was signed last month and played just 9 games with the Bruins, scoring two assists.
This move isn't terribly surprising given that the team claimed Oliver Wahlstrom off waivers from the New York Islanders earlier in the week.
This may be the end of the road for Johnson, however. The two time Stanley Cup champion had a stellar 17 goals and 31 points with the Chicago Blackhawks last season, but failed to land a contract as a free agent this past offseason. The Bruins invited him to training camp and offered him a contract last month, but he failed to catch on full-time with the team.
If this is indeed the end for Johnson, he'll finish his career with 193 goals and 433 points in 747 career games split between the Bruins, Blackhawks and Tampa Bay Lightning. Of course, he'll be remember most from his time with the Lightning where he played mostly on a line with Ondrej Palat and Nikita Kucherov. That line helped drive back to back Stanley Cup championships for the Lightning in 2020 and 2021, but his play has dropped off considerably in the years since.
