Bruce Cassidy on taking a Bruins star with him.
Cassidy would 'love' to bring him along.
The Boston Bruins made a stunning move this week when, on Monday, they announced the firing of head coach Bruce Cassidy. Cassidy, a former Jack Adams Trophy winner as the National Hockey League's best coach in the 2019 - 2020 season, is one of the most well respected coaches in the league and based on the reaction to the announcement I think it is fair to suggest that many fans in Boston would have preferred to see a change in management.
Cassidy, who since being fired has made it clear the decision was not his choice and that he would have loved to remain the coach of the Bruins, has unsurprisingly already spoken to interested teams in the NHL and he confirmed as much following his termination when he spoke to the media during a lengthy zoom call.
While it is unclear where the now former head coach of the Boston Bruins will end up next, what is clear is that he would love to bring one of the stars he spent so much time working with in Boston along with him for the ride. While speaking to the media following the surprise announcement from the Bruins, Cassidy was asked about current Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron whose own future is currently clouded by uncertainty. Bergeron, who will be an unrestricted free agent on July 13th, was arguably Cassidy's most valuable player during his tenure in Boston and the long time Bruins head coach admitted that he would love to have Bergeron playing for him again wherever he ends up coaching next.
"I’d like to take him with me . . . We have a tremendous relationship," said Cassidy as per the Telegram.
Some have suggested that Bergeron could have played a role in Cassidy's firing, suggesting that the captain could have demanded the coach be fired in order for him to return for another season. but during a French language interview in Quebec those rumors were completely shut down by Bergeron.
"Those rumors are completely unfounded and I won't waste any energy on that," said Bergeron as per the JDQ. "It's really the speculation of idiots and a waste of time."
Instead Bergeron claimed that he was surprised by the news and added that he felt personally responsible.
"As a player. it's disappointing because you've played a role in it. There's a feeling of responsibility for sure," said the Bruins captain.
