BREAKING: Red Wings Make Surprising Roster Cut
The Red Wings have proceeded to reassign players to the Grand Rapids Griffins..
HockeyFeed
After losing prospect Martin Frk to the Carolina Hurricanes through the waiver wire and assigning four other players to the Grand Rapids Griffins earlier today, the Detroit Red Wings sent another important piece of the roster down to their AHL affiliate.
Goaltender Jared Coreau, who was outstanding during the preseason, will not start the regular season with the big club and will therefore report to the Griffins.
While this move may come as a surprise to fans who believed that Coreau merits a backup role in 2016-2017, it’s important to remember that the Red Wings are handcuffed to Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek’s combined approximately $10 million salary cap hit. Howard will be a difficult asset to move, and it’s unclear if the organization intends on buying out his contract anytime soon.
