Brandon Carlo had a stunned reaction to learning a terrifying detail about the man he fought last night.

As it turns out, recently acquired Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Brandon Carlo had no idea what he was getting himself into on Saturday night and it sounds like he may have learned a valuable lesson from that.

Carlo and the Maple Leafs faced off against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night and it wouldn't be long before things would turn ugly between these two squads. After just a little over 3 minutes had expired off the game clock, Carlo would clash with Kings forward Jeff Malott, a relatively unknown commodity given that he had only played in a career total of 2 games in the National Hockey League.

The two men engaged in some pushing and shoving before eventually the gloves would come off and the two men would put on a hell of a show for the fans in Los Angeles. Both men landed heavy shots as they traded blows back and forth and, after the officials finally stepped in to put a stop to the exchange, it was evident on their faces that they had both taken some damage. Carlo in fact could be seen leaking from the bridge of his nose, with a few signs of some bruising forming on his face as well.

What Carlo didn't know coming into this fight is that there is some rather serious fighting background in Malott's family, and judging by his performance on Saturday it seems fair to suggest that some of that has rubbed off. Malott's brother, Mike Malott, is currently under contract with the UFC which of course stands for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Mike Malott, a Canadian born fighter from Burlington, Ontario, boasts an impressive record of 11 wins and 2 losses in his mixed martial arts career. It gets even scarier when you consider the fact that, of his 11 wins, only 1 has gone to a decision with Malott finishing his opponents in his other 10 victories.

Following the conclusion of last night's game, Carlo was asked if he was aware of these rather terrifying details about his opponent and the Maple Leafs defenseman was left stunned after learning of them for the first time right then and there.

"Not at all," said Carlo when asked if he knew. "But knowing that information, I'm thankful I'm not knocked out right now. So, that's good to know, and I'll definitely do a little bit more research next time."
