There are reports that Florida Panthers star forward Matthew Tkachuk is feeling good ahead of training camp after sustaining a brutal sternum injury in the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights in June.
However, his younger brother Brady Tkachuk, captain of the Ottawa Senators, revealed a bit more about exactly how painful the injury was when he spoke to media on Tuesday at the NHL’s North American Player Media. And he might have shared more private details than Matthew would have liked.
“I’m not going to lie, that was the craziest thing I’ve ever kind of been a part of,” Brady said, via NHL.com. “I just flew in for the game because I wanted to see a Stanley Cup Final game and he came back from the rink in the morning and just looked awful.”
Brady then explained that his brother called him up after his nap and realized he badly needed his help due to the amount of pain he was in.
“He says, ‘Can you come up here?’ We were just mucking it up and then he’s like, ‘Alright, I need you to help me up.’ I’m like, ‘You’re joking.’ He’s like, ‘No, I legit can’t get up. I just sneezed and I thought I died,’” Brady added.
Matthew did not end up playing in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final and then revealed the severity of his injury. While Brady’s comments on how bad it was give fans an inside look at the injury, many hope that Matthew is ready to go and that his brother hasn’t said too much about it.
However during that same NHL Media Tour, Brady and Matthew were asked to film a promo in the face-off circle and you can see them battling without holding back.
That’s a good sign for Matthew Tkachuk’s recovery. The Panthers open their season on the road against the Minnesota Wild on October 12. Brady and the Senators, meanwhile, open on the road against the Carolina Hurricanes on October 11. The two brothers will face each other on November 27 when the Panthers travel to Ottawa.
