Auston Matthews out after terrible injury update.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without captain Auston Matthews, but for how long.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without their captain Auston Matthews once again, but the question now is for how long?
According to a breaking news report from National Hockey League insider Chris Johnston, Matthews has once again been sidelined by the same mystery injury that has been hindering him since training camp earlier this year. That injury has already cost Matthews several games this season and it would appear that he had not fully recovered prior to returning.
According to Johnston, Matthews has reaggravated the injury and will miss today's game against the New York Islanders and is currently being considered "questionable" for Monday's game against the Winnipeg Jets.
The big concern here of course is any potential long term issues for Matthews and the Leafs, especially considering the fact that this appears to be an injury that both Matthews and the team are struggling to deal with.
Matthews took a trip to Germany earlier this year to seek treatment for the issue but it would seem that even that has not resolved the issue he is currently dealing with.
Matthews is having another solid season with 11 goals and 12 assists for a total of 23 points in 24 games, but his production this season has seen a decline from the outstanding season he had during the 2023-24 NHL regular season. In that campaign Matthews had 69 goals and 38 assists for a total of 107 points in 81 games or 1.32 points per game. This season by comparison Matthews is producing just 0.96 point per game.
No word on when Matthews reaggravated the injury but he did take a solid hit from Tage Thompson during last night's game against the Buffalo Sabres.
Stay tuned for more details.
