Which team will he sign with?

The National Hockey League's trade deadline may have come and gone, but team's around the league never stop trying to find ways to improve their roster both in the short term and the long term.

On Monday we got yet another sign of that reality with a report that there are currently at least 4 teams in the NHL currently fighting over the rights of a collegiate standout. According to Mollie Walker of the New York Post, 23 year old forward Bobby Trivigno is currently being courted by the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Nashville Predators and Florida Panthers.

Trivigno, a former teammate of Colorado Avalanche superstar defenseman Cale Makar, has just completed his fourth season at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and now seems poised to make the jump to the NHL. Trivigno is credited with having a drastic impact on the hockey program at the school and it would seem that several teams in the NHL have taken notice of that fact.

“Everybody can talk about Cale Makar,” said UMass head coach Greg Carvel as per The Post. “But the guy who will, for me, go down in history for changing this program, is Bobby Trivigno.

Trivigno is a native of Setauket, New York so it would seem that the teams based in that state may have the inside track of signing him as a free agent out of college, but there are other factors here that could sway him as well. Trivigno formerly had Brett Peterson as his personal advisor and Peterson now finds himself in the role of an assistant general manager for the Florida Panthers, a fact that likely explains why they are considered to be in the mix for his services. Peterson also likely knows the player about as well as anyone can, giving the Panthers a good idea of what they would be getting by signing the young man. That is all before we get into the usual factors like fit, potential openings in the lineup, and the potential for ice time.

In his most recent season Trivigno put up some very solid numbers, scoring 20 goals and adding 29 assists for a combined total of 49 points in just 37 games.
