Alex Ovechkin gets called out for changing Instagram picture in support of Putin
After saying “Please, no more war”, his actions speak louder than his words.

Fans feel like they’ve been duped. Last week, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin addressed the situation in Ukraine and begged for no more war as he described the attack as a “hard situation”, stating that he has friends in both Russia and Ukraine.
“Please, no more war. It doesn’t matter who is in the war, Russia, Ukraine, different countries. I think we live in a world…like we have to live in peace and a great world.”
However, reporters kept pushing to get answers seeing that Ovechkin is known to have a close relationship with president Vladimir Putin and has supported in the past all of his controversial political decisions.
The veteran forward openly campaigned for Putin in the past and once seemed to welcome the idea of a re-unified Soviet Union. Ovechkin even created a social movement called PutinTeam back in 2017 that encouraged other athletes to lend their support for Putin ahead of Russian’s 2018 Presidential election.
It was somewhat surprising to see him ask for peace, though as humans we have to admit he can too be sick of war. However, Ovechkin was called out on Tuesday when it was reported that he changed his Instagram profile picture back to the one where he can be seen standing next to Putin.
When he spoke about peace on Friday, there was disappointment that the Great Eight could have done more, but at least, it sounds like his views had changed.
Fans however felt he blew a chance to have to take a stand on Russia’s actions and now with this profile picture coming back on his page, they are reacting strongly to his move…
I am wondering if he will argue that this is a picture of him with a peace sign next to Putin in order to persuade the President to stop the war?
Earlier today, CCM Hockey made the decision to drop superstar Alex Ovechkin and other Russian NHLers from its marketing materials in response to Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
Every action matters and it looks like Ovechkin will have to explain the one involving his Instagram account…
