Wayne Gretzky issues challenge to Alex Ovechkin after he breaks his record.

The Great 8 has a new challenge to look forward to.

On Sunday, Alex Ovechkin did what many once believed impossible when he broke the all-time goal scoring mark in the National Hockey League established by NHL legend Wayne Gretzky (894), scoring the 895th goal of his career in a moment you have to see to believe.

The New York Islanders showed great class in allowing Ovechkin to hold a celebration for his record-setting moment on their home ice, a celebration that included a whole host of hockey celebrities. Among those was of course the previous record holder with The Great One himself showing nothing but class throughout the entire affair, but Gretzky did more than merely celebrate with Ovechkin on the ice.

As the two men shared a moment the cameras and microphones were rolling, embracing one another and sharing a few words, and luckily for those of us at home we got to hear exactly what was exchanged between the two legends of hockey. Gretzky, clearly showing great admiration for what Ovechkin had accomplished, issued him a new challenge and one that came with perhaps a very lucrative reward.

Gretzky informed Ovechkin that, should he find his way to the 900 goal plateau, there would perhaps be a little pot of gold waiting at the end of that rainbow.

"Get to 900, if you get to 900 I might buy you a car," said Gretzky with a smile.

Ovechkin told Gretzky that he would indeed attempt to make good on that challenge.

"I will try," said a very serious Ovechkin.

Now Gretzky didn't mention what kind of car that he might be buying Ovechkin if he does reach the 900 goal plateau for the first time in NHL history, but earlier during the celebration Gretzky made mention of the car he received when he broke Gordie Howe's record all those years ago. That car was a Rolls Royce, which is certainly a very nice added incentive for Ovechkin to get to 900.
