Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers opened the Western Conference final on Tuesday night against Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche and while fans expected this series to be an offensive showdown, no one expected this many goals…

And that includes legendary NHL forward Wayne Gretzky, who couldn’t believe the 7-4 score after two periods. As the Great One discussed the game during the second intermission, he couldn’t help but bluntly criticize the Avs and the Oilers’ defensive teams and he compared the contest to the ones he played back in the day during his Stanley Cup runs. This is epic:

“I might’ve been the most offensive player to ever live, but you gotta play defense, man!”

This quote, who knows, it might rank right up there with ‘you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.’

Gretzky was not targeting one team more than the other in this crazy matchup. He was pointed out all of the odd man rushes and sent his message to both teams.

The greatest player of all time is allowed to criticize whoever he wants. Especially when he’s right.

The score simply increased in the third period, but the Avalanche held off the Oilers’ comeback attempt to win Game 1 by the score of 8-6. Darcy Kuemper made 13 saves for the Avalanche before suffering an upper-body injury in the second period. Avalanche backup Pavel Francouz finished with 18 stops. Mike Smith allowed six goals on 25 shots before Mikko Koskinen took over, making 20 stops the rest of the way.

As for the teams’ defense… well, Gretzky said it best.
