Vancouver Canucks announce even more front-office terminations!
The purge in Vancouver continues.
It's been a whirlwind week of changes for the Vancouver Canucks, who broomed out head coach Travis Green as well as general manager Jim Benning after their paltry 9-15-2 start to the 2021-22 season.
And now, under new president and interim GM Jim Rutherford, more changes have been announced. Executive Direcor of Hockey Operations Jonathan Wall and Assistant GM Chris Gear have also been dismissed by the club:
Team owner Francesco Aquilini made it clear in a press conference after the initial changes were announced earlier this week that his goal remains winning a championship, and that changes were needed in order to make that happen.
"These are difficult decisions, but we believed we would have a competitive group this year," Aquilini said. "As a result, I'm extremely disappointed in how the team has performed so far. I'm making these changes because we want to build a team that competes for championships, and it's time for new leadership to help take us there."
Rutherford arrived in Vancouver after stepping down from the Pittsburgh Penguins for personal reasons; he's also served as president and GM for the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes.
"It is time for a new vision and a new leader who will set a path forward for this team," Aquilini later said in a statement regarding Rutherford's hiring. "Jim has tremendous experience building and leading winning organizations and I believe he will help build the Vancouver Canucks into a team that can compete for championships again."
The Canucks have shown improvements under new coach Bruce Boudreau, going 2-0 in the two games that he's spent behind the bench since his hiring with a two-year deal.
