The Toronto Maple Leafs will lose forward Tyler Bertuzzi to free agency.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider Darren Dreger, the Maple Leafs will not be able to retain Bertuzzi and the 29 year old forward will instead walk away as a free agent on July 1st.

It sounds like this was simply a matter of dollars and cents with Dreger reporting that the Maple Leafs were priced out of negotiations, with Bertuzzi reportedly seeking a multi-year deal with an average annual value and salary cap hit of over $5 million per season.

Bertuzzi was an effective player for the Maple Leafs over the course of the 2023-24 NHL season, scoring 21 goals and adding 22 asissts for a total of 43 points. In the playoffs he also produced a goal and 3 assists for a total of 4 points over the course of the Maple Leafs 7 playoff games this season.

Bertuzzi was seeking a longer term deal last summer when he signed with the Maple Leafs after being unable to find such a deal on the open market, but it seems the veteran forward is once again willing to test his luck.
