It's no secret around the league that the Los Angeles Kings have been left in a terrible position due to the entire Slava Voynov domestic abuse scandal.
Voynov has not been found guilty of any crime, the result is an indefinite suspension that leaves his cap hit on the books. This has forced the Kings to play short a man on multiple occasions this season, and now we are hearing reports that L.A. is looking to move two time Stanley Cup winner, and the only player to win at Championships at Jr (CHL Memorial Cup) Minors (AHL) Professional Stanley Cup (NHL) and at Olympic and World Championship Levels (IIHF and IIHF World Juniors), Mike Richards.
The problem for L.A. is that Richards has 6 years years left on his deal, 6 years at $5.75 million a season no less. To make matters worse one could easily argue that Richards has been on the decline since leaving Philadelphia having failed to break the 50 point mark in all 3 seasons with the Kings.
Recently reports have begun to circulate regarding the possibility of the salary cap remaining where it is next season. This may not seem like major news to most but we have already seen the impact. Yesterday we reported that Sergei Gonchar of the Stars had been traded for Travis Moen of the Canadians.
This was without question a salary move for both sides, The Canadians were looking to free up space for next year but getting rid of a year of contract with Moen(Moen has 2 years left on his deal), while the Stars were looking to dump Gonchar's $5m million dollar salary this season. You can expect many more moves of this nature, especially from teams at the cap ceiling if the situation doesn't change.
