Second group of Canadian NHL fans boo American national anthem.
A second Canadian city boos the American national anthem before an NHL game on Saturday night.
Angry Canadian fans were out in full force on Saturday night with not just one but two instances of some rather uncharacteristic behavior from the usually warm and welcoming Canadian fan base.
The first sign of trouble would come during a game between the Ottawa Senators and Minnesota Wild when a contingent of fans in Ottawa could be heard loudly booing and jeering during the performing of the American national anthem. The provocative display from Canadian fans in Ottawa resulted in quite the response on social media but it would seem that the initial backlash to fans in Ottawa hasn't deterred fans in Canada from expressing their displeasure.
A new video published by Edmonton radio personality Courtney Theriault now shows a second instance of this occurring on Saturday night, with the video from Theriault coming from an entirely different game. This time the scene is Saturday night's game between the Detroit Red Wings and Calgary Flames, with the boos this time coming at the end of the national anthem.
Here's the video:
The boos in Calgary are less pronounced than the ones we heard in Ottawa, although that could be due to the quality of the recording, but there's no mistaking the sentiment being expressed by at least some fans in the crowd.
Unsurprisingly fans on the American side of the border took great pleasure in the fact that the Red Wings triumphed over the Flames after their anthem was disrespected on Saturday.
While I believe this type of hostility is less than ideal from sports fans, if you're looking for a silver lining here I do have one for you. The 4 Nations Face-Off is just around the corner and this recent development is likely to turn up the intensity on an already heated rivalry between Canada and the United States of America on the ice.
