Two Jakob Chychrun trades fall apart with little to go ahead of deadline!
What does it mean for the defenseman?

The clock is ticking ahead of the NHL trade deadline, but it sounds like the time for defenseman Jakob Chychrun with the Arizona Coyotes might not be coming to an end.
It all started to be a bit more clear last week when the Boston Bruins, who were linked to Chychrun in the past, decided to pass up on the Coyotes’ blue liner and acquired defenseman Dmitry Orlov and bottom-six forward Garnet Hathaway from the Washington Capitals instead.
Then on Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers landed defenseman Mattias Ekholm from the Nashville Predators in exchange for blue liner Tyson Barrie, forward Reid Schaefer, a 2023 first-round pick and a fourth-round selection in 2024, which prompted Pierre LeBrun to reveal on Insider Trading on TSN how another destination for Chychrun came off the board.
“[It’s been] 18 months since we start reporting on his availability. That’s how long it’s been for Jakob Chychrun being out there, of course, you know, he’s asked for a move. You know, and Darren Dreger reported earlier on Tuesday, it feels like four days ago but the Oilers and Arizona went pretty deep on a Chychrun trade conversation Monday but the deal fell apart.”
There were also rumblings that the Los Angeles Kings were interested in Chychrun, but moved on and last night, pulled the trigger on a blockbuster trade, acquiring defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Chychrun was once again held out of the Coyotes’ lineup on Tuesday, along with teammate forward Nick Bjugstad, so Arizona looks to be still working to move the defenseman. Chychrun hasn’t played for the Coyotes since February 10. LeBrun added this on a potential trade:
“Can also tell you that Washington had some pretty substantial talks about Chychrun over the past week. Buffalo has kept tabs on it. Pittsburgh has had conversations so there are still teams in this. But as one GM said to me in the last hour, if the Coyotes don’t change their price he doesn’t see him getting moved and that Bill Armstrong, the GM of the Coyotes, is actually comfortable keeping Jakob Chychrun through this deadline and finally figuring this out in the summer. But there’s lots of time between now and Friday to still get a trade done and Armstrong was circling back to some of the teams involved to see where they were at here in the last few hours.”
Many teams have been monitoring the situation on Chychrun, though some clubs have expressed frustration in not being able to see the defenseman in action some more before pulling the trigger on such a monster trade. The Coyotes are reportedly asking for two first-round picks in return for Chychrun’s services .
With two trade down the drain, the third time might be the charm for Chychrun at this year’s deadline…
