Two big injury updates for the Penguins on Sunday.
The struggling Pittsburgh Penguins appear to be on the verge of getting some reinforcements.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have not had the season they were hoping for and find themselves near the bottom of the National Hockey League's Metropolitan Division. Although it wouldn't be fair to attribute all of the team's failures this season to their injury woes, there's no question about the fact that injuries have been a major contributing factor for the lack of success the Penguins have seen.
The team's depth has been sorely tested and despite coming into the weekend with a 2 game win streak and some momentum, the Penguins were blown out on Saturday night by the Toronto Maple Leafs, giving up 7 goals and putting up none against Maple Leafs 3rd string goaltender Martin Jones.
In spite of the fact that the game against the Leafs put an ugly spin on the weekend, it sounds like the Penguins may actually end the weekend on a positive note. On Sunday, two of the Penguins who have been out of action due to injury were spotted in full contact jerseys during the Penguins morning skate, with Noel Acciari being a full participant for the first time since being injured and with Rickard Rakell participating in his second full practice since his injury.
There is no indication of when either man will officially make their return to the lineup, but Sunday's practice was definitely a positive sign with both men participating in the line rushes as well.
Here's how the lineup looked with both men back in action:
Guentzel-Crosby-Rakell
Smith-Malkin-Puustinen
O'Connor-Eller-Zohorna
Harkins-Acciari-Carter
Johnstone-Gruden-Hinostroza
Pettersson-Letang
Graves-Karlsson
Ludvig-Ruhwedel
Joseph-Shea
