Trevor Zegras responds to questions about his comments to Troy Stecher.
Zegras goes on the record.
The Anaheim Ducks, and more specifically star forward Trevor Zegras, currently find themselves at the center of a disturbing controversy, one that may quite honestly be very overblown.
Zegras was involved in what was a heated exchange with Arizona Coyotes defenseman Troy Stecher on Saturday night during the second period of a game contested between the Ducks and Coyotes, and there have been some ugly rumors regarding some of the comments allegedly made by Zegras during that exchange.
Many have been quick to leap to the conclusion that Zegras made comments regarding Stecher's late father, something that would of course be completely out of line. Whatever Zegras did say it clearly provoked a very strong reaction from Stecher, a player that is not particularly known for losing his cool on the ice.
Zegras was of course asked about the exchange following Saturday's game and for what it's worth it sounds very much like he is denying having said anything that would cross a line. In fact Zegras not only said that it was your typical trash talk, but even appeared to mock Stecher for over reacting to what he said.
“I’m not sure – it was pretty standard trash talk,” Zegras said as per The OC Register. “If he wants to act like that, it’s totally fine.”
Ducks head coach Dallas Eakins also did not appear to have a problem with what transpired, especially considering the fact that Zegras would go on to score the eventual game winner.
“Have at it. This is a game, if you can throw the other team off-kilter, throw ‘em off," said Eakins. "I said it to (Ducks assistant coach) Newell Brown on the bench: He (Zegras) is right in their head. They’re all messed up and they’re going to be even madder when he scores the winner.”
This certainly clears up one side of the story, but we still have yet to hear comment from Troy Stecher himself regarding what was said on the ice.
