Travis Hamonic goes down one day after the trade deadline.
An ugly looking situation in Ottawa with Travis Hamonic writhing in pain on the ice.
There isn't a worse time for an injury during the regular season than right now, one day removed from the National Hockey League's trade deadline, and unfortunately for the Ottawa Senators that is exactly the scenario they are living through right now.
During Saturday's clash between the Senators and New York Rangers, Senators defenseman Travis Hamonic suffered an ugly looking injury in what were the final minutes of regular play. With just over 4 minutes remaining on the game clock, Hamonic would chase the puck behind the net where he was closely followed by Rangers forward Sam Carrick who made a play on the puck. Hamonic and Carrick would then battle for the puck along the boards, getting physical with one another in the process, when Hamonic suddenly fell awkwardly to the ice.
Hamonic's leg appeared to buckle under his own weight and he looked to be in quite some distress on the ice. Hamonic could quite literally be seen frantically crawling across the ice as if trying to escape the pain he was currently experiencing.
Here's a look at the full replay of the chase behind the net and Hamonic's subsequent fall to the ice.
This appears to have been a mere freak accident with there appearing to be no ill intent of any kind on the part of Carrick who genuinely seemed to be more interested in the puck than Hamonic himself.
The good news here for the Senators is that Hamonic was able to get himself off the ice, although he wasn't putting any weight on his injured leg as he made his exit to the locker room.
No official update as of now on his status.
