Trade fell through before Bo Horvat was moved to Islanders

More than a month prior to the trade deadline, the New York Islanders jumped the gun and acquired Bo Horvat on Monday from the Vancouver Canucks in return for Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Raty and a protected 2023 first-round draft pick.
This will surely get things going on the trade market with talks already getting louder that more moves will come in Vancouver.

The Islanders were not the only ones in the mix for Horvat before they were able to pull the trigger with their offer. Insider Kevin Weekes revealed how another team was involved in trade negotiations with the Canucks, president Jim Rutherford and GM Patrik Allvin, however, they locked in on what was presented by the Islanders.

We don’t get to know what team failed to reach a deal with the Canucks and what the offer was. Horvat was linked in the past to the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Seattle Kraken and Winnipeg Jets.

As part of the trade, Vancouver is retaining 25 percent of Horvat’s $5.5 million cap hit, per Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello. The move leaves New York with $16.275 million in projected off-season cap space, with 16 players under contract.. The Isles GM is hopeful that Horvat will be interested in signing long-term with his team.

The Islanders are currently sixth in the Metropolitan Division with 55 points, just two points shy of the last Wild-card playoff spot in the Eastern conference as they enter the All-Star break. The Islanders were after an infusion of offence for a long playoff run and get that in Horvat at the expense of another team that didn’t win the sweepstakes for the Canucks’ now-former captain.
