It was recently reported that the Edmonton Oilers and general manager Ken Holland are getting more serious about filling the void on the back end and taking a closer look at the trade market for a defenseman.
Team insider Mark Spector of Sportsnet revealed how an NHL scout believes Holland should take a closer look at division rival Vancouver Canucks as one of their defensemen could be what Edmonton is looking for to reach the postseason and get a longer playoff run.
Spector points to Luke Schenn, who has been excellent for the Canucks despite their struggles this season. Schenn is a former two-time Stanley Cup champion with the defending Eastern Conference champions Tampa Bay Lightning and could bring the experience and leadership on the ice and in the Oilers’ dressing room. That energy too has been missing in Edmonton especially since veterans Mike Smith and Duncan Keith aren’t around anymore.
Schenn is a pending unrestricted free agent, who will be coveted as a rental ahead of the March 3rd deadline. He carries a cheap cap hit and would be an ideal add to the Oilers’ books.
Edmonton also lacks physical play, which many fans hope will be added once Evander Kane returns, however Schenn would also bring forth that quality along with reliable defensive plays.
He might be the best cheap option for the Oilers, or any team looking to add on its blue line for the postseason. There is still time to go ahead of the deadline and we might get a better sense if Edmonton will jump in the mix and make a move for Schenn.
