Top goalie prospect Trey Augustine informs Red Wings he won't be signing with them
The World Juniors star has other plans.
Michigan State star goaltender Try Augustine has informed the Detroit Red Wings that he does not intend to sign a contract with the team ahead of the 2025-26 season and will instead return to Michigan State for one more season.
The 20 year old goaltender was an absolute stud for Michigan State the past two seasons and, of course, was a big part of team USA's win at the 2025 World Junior Championships. The South Lyon, Michigan product was selected in the 2nd round (41st overall) of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft and has since established himself as one of the top goaltending prospects in hockey.
Along with 2021 15th overall selection Sebastian Cossa, he and Augustine represent some strong prospect depth at the goaltending position for the Red Wings. Augustine is likely at least a couple years away from seeing NHL action though, while Cossa has looked stellar at the AHL level the past two seasons. If the Red Wings play their cards right they could have two promising goaltenders graduate to the NHL in short order. Stay tuned.
