Talk about having a dream come true
Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary is having himself a National Hockey League debut that he won't soon forget. He's already collected his first goal, banging home the puck past Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger:
Zary was selected 24th overall by the Flames in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
He now finds himself in good company with a player you may have heard of by the name of Mario Lemieux, who scored in his NHL debut on his very first shot on goal. While Zary certainly has a ways to go in order to catch Lemieux's career statistics, it's still an incredible feeling for the 22 year old Saskatoon native.
Prior to his having been called up by the Flames, Zary had been leading their American Hockey League affiliate Calgary Wranglers players with points in six games this season. He also recorded 58 points in 72 games played last season.
As former NHL goaltender turned commentator Kevin Weeks likes to say, "Welcome to the National!"
