The Washington Capitals are set to get a massive boost to their lineup.

According to a report from Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press, Capitals star forward Nicklas Backstrom will make his long awaited season debut on Sunday when the Capitals face off against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Backstrom returned to skating in full equipment back in November in what was a very long road to recovery following a major surgical procedure in the offseason. Backstrom underwent a procedure known as hip resurfacing back in June of 2022, a form of artificial joint replacement, and there were real questions about his future as a player in the league.

Backstrom, who has played in over 1000 NHL games for the Capitals during his illustrious NHL career, will be a welcomed addition to the Capitals lineup as they continue to fight for a playoff spot in the NHL's Metropolitan Division.

Joining Backstrom in Columbus on Sunday will be Capitals enforcer Tom Wilson, who will also make his season debut for the Capitals.

Wilson has been out of the lineup following reconstructive surgery on his injured knee all the way back in May of 2022. Wilson tore the ACL in his left knee and that catastrophic injury has kept him out of the Capitals lineup ever since.

Wilson has a large impact on the game whenever he is on the ice both due to his skills as a forward and the level of physicality he brings to the table. His return combined with that of Backstrom will no doubt prove to be a big boost to the Capitals' playoff push in the second half of the regular season.
