Edmonton Oilers forward Kailer Yamamoto appears to be ready to return and can be activated off the long-term injured reserve on February 12, however, the team will need to make room for him in order to be cap-compliant. This means there will be a cap casualty, and according to insider Frank Seravalli, it might end up turning into a trade.

Seravalli has revealed that there is reportedly a trade in place to move Puljujarvi out of Edmonton, and that the Oilers are simply waiting to see what happens with the return of Yamamoto.

Whenever Yamamoto is cleared, the Oilers will have to create cap space to put his $3.1 million cap hit back on the active roster. Puljujarvi is riding the last months of his one-year contract at $3 million…

The Finnish forward will be restricted free agent this summer and is unlikely to be qualified by the Oilers. There is no way there is a long-term fit between Puljujarvi and Edmonton, so move him!

The ideal trade scenario would be for the Oilers to dump his full $3 million salary without giving up a sweetener in the process. But that might be impossible to do. Seravalli does not specify if the said trade in place includes a sweetener from Edmonton.

In earlier articles, Seravalli had hinted at a potential trade with the Florida Panthers for Anthony Duclair in a one for one transaction. The insider also dressed a list of potential fits for Puljujarvi not only in any Edmonton trade partner and the aforementioned Panthers, but also in the St. Louis Blues and Tampa Bay Lightning.

On Tuesday, Puljujarvi was a healthy scratch against the Red Wings in Detroit. Let’s see if this is indeed Puljujarvi’s last week playing with the Oilers as this rumoured deal remains in place and on everyone’s minds.
