The NHL's top 10 best goalies of the season... so far.

The top 10 best goaltenders in the National Hockey League this season... so far.

Jonathan Larivee

The National Hockey League's 2024-25 regular season is officially underway and with every team around the league now having at least a few games under their belts, it is time to massively over react to very small sample sizes of data.

Yesterday I took a look at the 10 worst goalies in the NHL this season, at least so far, so today I will be looking at the more positive side of that coin by highlighting the 10 best goalies in the NHL so far. Some of the names on this list will come as little surprise to most fans, but I do believe that there are a few unexpected names here that stand out and make this list worth taking a look at.

This list is determined by goals saved above expected, data that comes to us via Top Down Hockey and that has been compiled into a nice clean chart courtesy of J Fresh Hockey. As I mentioned some of the names on this list may surprise you.

Here is a look at the 10 best goalies in the NHL.

Jake Oettinger (Dallas Stars)
+7.4 goals saved above expected.
Anthony Stolarz (Toronto Maple Leafs)
+6.3 goals saved above expected.
Samuel Montembeault (Montreal Canadiens)
+6.2 goals saved above expected.
Igor Shesterkin (New York Rangers)
+6.1 goals saved above expected.
Lukas Dostal (Anaheim Ducks)
+5.0 goals saved above expected.
Filip Gustavsson (Minnesota Wild)
+4.5 goals saved above expected.
Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg Jets)
+4.0 goals saved above expected.
Kevin Lankinen (Vancouver Canucks)
+3.9 goals saved above expected.
Jake Allen (New Jersey Devils)
+3.7 goals saved above expected.
Alex Lyon (Detroit Red Wings)
+3.4 goals saved above expected.

As I stated at the beginning of the article this is a very small sample size and we will likely see these numbers and placements shift drastically over the course of the regular season, but I will be sure to look back and compare them at different points during the season.
