The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has reportedly made a ruling regarding a controversial incident on Saturday night and if I had to guess I have to imagine that fans of the Detroit Red Wings are going to be rather unhappy about this one.
Red Wings insider Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reported today that the Red Wings have placed Anthony Mantha on injured reserve following an incident during the third period of Saturday night's match up against the Toronto Maple Leafs in which Mantha was slammed to the ice by Maple Leafs' defenseman Jake Muzzin. That was not new information as the Red Wings themselves had announced the move, however St. James also added that Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill informed her of the fact that the National Hockey League has chosen not to take action regarding the incident.
That will not sit well with the Red Wings I am certain as the maneuver utilized by Muzzin to injure Manatha was clearly an illegal one and resembled some type of judo throw like a hip toss or a leg sweep. That being said though it is also fair to say that Mantha himself was the one who instigated the exchange between the two men and he did have Muzzin locked in a headlock prior to the throw from Muzzin, so that may have been a significant mitigating factor in the league's decision here. Unfortunately the Wings will now be without Mantha for at least a week due to the injured reserve designation, and there is always the possibility that he could be out even beyond that stretch.
For those of you who didn't see it, here's a replay:
There was also another incident that occurred shortly after the Muzzin slam involving Andreas Athanasiou, one where Athanasiou appeared to attempt to deliver a rather deliberate looking knee on knee to Leafs defenseman Justin Holl. Like the slam from Muzzin many felt that the actions of Athanasiou should rise to the level of a suspension, but it now seems as though the NHL may simply wash their hands of both incidents and will in fact limit their discipline regarding this game to the fine they handed down to Red Wings forward Robby Fabbri earlier today.
