The 10 best and worst goalies of the year... so far.

The first half of the National Hockey League season has produced some very interesting results.

One of the hottest topics across the National Hockey League this season has been goaltending. Several teams around the NHL have seen their goaltending situations implode and that has fueled a ton of talk around potential moves and trades and has already led to some high profile demotions including that of Edmonton Oilers goaltender Jack Campbell and Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta.

This has also opened up the door for some surprises as well and we've seen some unexpected names shine as a result, including at the very top of this list. Recently JFreshHockey collected data from TopDownHockey to compile a list of the 10 best goalies in the NHL this season, so far. To do so he used the goals saved above expected metric, an advanced stat that uses an expected goals model comparing an individual goaltender's performance to the league average, while valuing shots differently based on their quality (low danger vs high danger).

A name that will surprise many who have not been paying attention to the Arizona Coyotes will top the list with Connor Ingram having a +13.0 goals saved above expected thus far. He's closely followed by Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko (+12.3), Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman (+11.7), Vegas Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill (+10.7), and Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry (+10.4) who round out the top 5.

Unfortunately as well as some goaltenders have performed this season there are also those who have woefully underperformed. Using the same metric of goals saved above expected, we have a list of the 10 worst goalies in the NHL thus far this season with some shocking names on the list.

At the very top, or bottom depending on how you look at it, is Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov with a stunning -16.1 goals saved above expected, putting him well ahead of the pack as the worst goaltender in the league. Even Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta, who was demoted to the American Hockey League and holds down second place, only boast a goals saved above expected of -12.7.

Rounding out the top 5 are New Jersey Devils goaltender Vitek Vanecek (-11.5), Ottawa Senators goaltender Joonas Korpisalo (-11.1), and Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Arvid Soderblom (-10.8).
