Team Canada officially names starting goaltender on Monday.
With their tournament life on the line, Team Canada has named their starting goaltender.
There has been plenty of controversy surrounding the decisions from Team Canada regarding their goaltending coming into the Four Nations Face-Off and, should Canada falter in this tournament, today's decision from Canadian head coach Jon Cooper will no doubt be heavily scrutinized as well.
On Monday, Team Canada officially announced their starting goaltender for their game against Team Finland, with the announcement that Jordan Binnington will once again get the start. Canada will have their tournament lives on the line, needing a win in regulation to guarantee their spot in the final on Thursday.
Binnington's play at this tournament has been the subject of a great deal of criticism, with the St. Louis Blues netminder putting up fairly mediocre numbers through his first 2 games. Through those 2 games, Binnington has posted a 2.41 goals against average and a .896 save percentage, not the kind of numbers you want to see from your number one goalie at a tournament of this magnitude.
Canada has had the option of going to either Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill or Montreal Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault at any time, but Jon Cooper has made it clear from the start that he intends to stick with Binnington throughout this tournament.
That won't do anything to reassure those who have had concerns over some of the soft goals Binnington has allowed in this tournament, and now only time will tell if Cooper's confidence in Binnington is warranted or if it will prove to be costly for the Canadians in this tournament.
