It may be the offseason but Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev isn’t taking time off from getting under the skin of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
This past spring, the Maple Leafs squared off against the Bolts in the first round of the postseason, and Tampa almost upset Toronto again as it went to Game 6 to finally see the Leafs make it to the second round. Sergachev offered his version of the showdown between the two Eastern rivals in a tell-all interview with Sport24, providing his personal perspective on what happened against the Maple Leafs.
This is from the interview:
Sergachev: “I don’t want to put any pluses on Toronto now, they didn’t deserve them.”
Reporter: “Why don’t you want to put Toronto pluses?”
Sergachev: :Well, why? I don’t think they deserve much.”
Reporter: “For the first time in 19 years, the first round was passed!”
Sergachev: “Well done here, they went through the first round, but did not go further. So I don’t see any reason to rejoice here.”
Brutal. Sergachev, who is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, probably feels the Lightning would have gone further than Toronto if it wasn’t for losing several key players too early in the series due to injuries.
This isn’t however the first time Sergachev takes a shot at the Maple Leafs, and I can’t imagine it will be the last either…
