To say that Edmonton Oilers goaltender Jack Campbell has not lived up to the hefty contract that he signed this summer after being lured away from the Toronto Maple Leafs would be a big time understatement. Despite a record one game above the .500 mark, Campbell has registered a ghastly 3.90 goals against average along with a .876 save percentage, and zero shutouts.
Certainly not even close to the kind of numbers that GM Ken Holland was anticipating for the goalie affectionately known as "Soup", who was in discussions for the Vezina Trophy at this point last season with the Leafs.
And in an effort to switch things around, Campbell decided to make a change in his equipment. Having always worn Vaughn branded gear, he recently shook things up and debuted a brand new set of gear from Brians Custom Sports:
Campbell played well enough for his team to get a victory on New Year's Eve, stopping 15 of 17 shots from the Winnipeg Jets. Unfortunately, his teammates were only able to get one puck past Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.
“The guys played really hard and really well. Would have been nice to get the win for them,” Campbell said while sure to also give a shout out to Hellebuyck. "He's a pretty darned good goalie, a Vezina Trophy winner, and he played like it tonight."
What did Campbell have to say about changing up his gear? Apparently, it's the first time he's ever done something like that.
“I've never done that,” he admitted. “I don't think I've changed in two decades. Just trying something new.”
Campbell and the Oilers are back in action tomorrow night at home at Rogers Place against the upstart Seattle Kraken, who are challenging for a postseason spot in their second year of existence.
