The Detroit Red Wings have made some surprising moves over the course of the last 48 hours with a second such move coming on Sunday morning.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, the Red Wings have made the surprising decision to put goaltender Ville Husso on waivers on Sunday. Husso, who was acquired by the Red Wings in 2022 via a trade with the St. Louis Blues that sent a third round draft pick back the other way, was signed to a lucrative 3 year deal upon joining the team, one that carries an average annual value and salary cap hit of $4.75 million per season.

The Red Wings of course now run the risk of losing Husso for absolutely nothing and, perhaps more interestingly, that appears to be a risk that Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman is prepared to take at this point.

The move comes roughly 24 hours after the Red Wings made the decision to call up veteran defenseman Justin Holl from the Grand Rapids Griffins, a move that was not viewed favorably by the Red Wings faithful.

This move appears designed to give the Red Wings some flexibility against the cap space, although it is likely fair to suggest that Husso's ugly start to the season may have also played a role. Husso's sole appearance this season lasted just 25 minutes, with Husso recording an abysmal .714 save percentage over that short stretch of play.

It seems unlikely, given both his sizeable cap hit and his struggles on the ice, that there would be a team in the NHL willing to take the risk of claiming him off of waivers over the next 24 hours.

Stay tuned for more on this developing story.
