Pittsburgh Penguins superstar captain Sidney Crosby recently admitted how he would love to suit up with Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid - albeit on the international stage. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman has reported that the Penguins’ star forward is even willing to take it a step further to ensure he gets to play alongside McDavid, making the sacrifice of moving to the wing to let the Oilers’ star drive the offense. Here is how Friedman put it in his latest 32 Thoughts column:
“Not exactly sure what it’s going to look like, but both the NHL and NHLPA are intent on a February 2025 international hockey event. The lack of high-level international hockey hurts, and everyone sees it. There’s a desire to play some games overseas, but not sure it’s going to be possible. There’s also a desire to find a fresh way of presenting or doing the competition.
“Sidney Crosby , asked who will play wing on a line with Connor McDavid, said, “I’ll go there.” When told he was supposed to say McDavid will move, Crosby replied, “I’ve skated with him, I’ve played both. I think I’m good either way. He can carry the mail.” Two years ago, Crosby skated on a line with McDavid at the BioSteel camp so the two could get to know each other prior to the aborted 2022 Olympic participation.”
How much would you like to see Crosby and McDavid play together - on the same line?
Crosby captained Canada to gold in the 2010 Vancouver games (scoring the tournament-winning “golden goal” in the process) and the 2014 Sochi games.
The NHL is believed to be hoping to host an International tournament in 2025 followed by a return to the Olympics the following year; NHL players were excluded from participating in the recent Beijing Olympics.
