It was a tough Trade Dad-line Day for the Penguins, who ended up shipping out star winger Jake Guentzel amongst others in order to focus on a rebuild in Pittsburgh. As Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, captain Sidney Crosby is understandably frustrated with general manager Kyle Dubas’ decision to turn to a youth retooling and has heard the rumours of Crosby possibly looking to be traded or sign elsewhere, with a Stanley Cup contender, for another chance at the championship before hanging up the skates.

In a French interview with TVA Sports on Wednesday, former Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron was asked about the situation involving his former Team Canada teammate in Pittsburgh, and Bergeron gave an important advice to Crosby. After spending his entire career in Boston, Bergeron can easily understand what Sid is going through:

“I don’t know what he’s going to do, but as long as he follows his heart. Of course it would be weird to see him in a uniform different than that of the Penguins, because he started there at 18 and he saved the franchise,” Bergeron explained on the JiC show.

“We’ll see what happens next, but for my part, I’m a little more old fashioned and with a loyal side, therefore I hope he can stay,” he continued.

Friedman also gets the feeling that Crosby will not give up that easily on his Penguins. In his latest written version of the 32 Thoughts on Sportsnet, Friedman talked about Crosby’s frustration, but also pointed to the loyalty he has to the organization, his teammates, and most importantly, his friends.

“Crosby’s earned the right to do what he wants, but, after Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin signed for term, I don’t see him walking away without giving the front office a chance to turn things around. I’ve said this on the pod, but my guess is they offer him two or three years at $10.5M-ish and we go from there.”

While Crosby might already know what to do as he will be eligible to sign an extension in Pittsburgh starting on July 1st, I’m not sure rumours will quiet down until then, especially if the Penguins fail to make the postseason for the second straight year.
