The Toronto Maple Leafs were able to get things done last night against the visiting Seattle Kraken, enjoying a 4-3 victory in the shootout to secure a valuable two points in the tightly packed Atlantic Division standings.
And while they may not be running away with things in the division or in the Eastern Conference, head coach Sheldon Keefe inadvertently gave the rest of the National Hockey League some prime bulletin board material.
"I am sure we are thinking about it too much," Keefe said afterward. "We have been in this situation a lot. We are asked about it every single day — and for good reason. We haven’t found a way to get on the right side of it."
He then delivered this line that will surely catch the attention of everyone around the League who reads it:
"At the end of the day, this is a really hard league to get points in," he said. "I just looked before I came in. I think there are 23 teams below us in the standings right now, and we haven’t played our best hockey."
He continued:
"We are in a pretty good place while we continue to work through the things that we have to improve on. The points that we have accumulated to this point are not nothing. There are a lot of good things happening there that are putting us in those positions.
Obviously, we know we have to continue to improve in the areas that will get us on the other side of it so that we don’t have to go to overtime or shootout.
Those points aren’t nothing. Those are important."
It's going to be a major matchup tomorrow night at Scotiabank Arena, as the Leafs bring in the Original 6 and divisional rival Boston Bruins for a Saturday night affair.
