Sheldon Keefe announces a significant change in goal.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are making a significant change in goal for the final stretch of the regular season.

On Saturday morning, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed that he would switch to a system of alternating goaltenders for the final games of the regular season. Keefe will be deploying both goaltenders Joseph Woll and Ilya Samsonov an equal amount, somewhat of a surprise given that Woll has only just returned from injury.

Keefe did not go so far as to suggest that he would swap goalies every single game, but suggested that a pattern similar to that one is how he would like to proceed.

"They will play about the same, whether it's alternating, or two here, two there," admitted Keefe on Saturday. "As I've looked at it and tried to map it out ... I don’t see it going any differently than that."

It may be that Keefe feels Samsonov could use the extra rest given the heavy workload he has carried in recent weeks, or it may very well be that Keefe is looking to get Woll prepared for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Perhaps it may even be a little bit of both, with the Maple Leafs head coach perhaps looking to make his decision about who will start in the playoffs over this final stretch.

What is certain is that Samsonov will get the start this evening against the Edmonton Oilers, with Samsonov being the first goalie off the ice during the team's morning skate on Saturday.
