Sharks start the season with one of the most embarrassing statistics in recent memory.

This is almost unbelievable.

The San Jose Sharks have only played 2 games to start the 2019 - 2020 National Hockey League regular season, but things have been so bad in those first 2 games that some fans are already demanding change.

The Sharks began the regular season this past Wednesday against bitter rivals the Las Vegas Golden Knights. These two teams clashed in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs in a 7 games series that ended with one of the most controversial calls in recent NHL playoff history, a call that many believed was the determining factor in the outcome of that series. As a result a natural rivalry has formed between these two Western Conference teams and many were expecting fireworks to start the regular season. Unfortunately for the Sharks they put up somewhat of a listless effort, eventually falling to the Golden Knights by a score of 4 - 1 in their season opener.

Not all was lost however as the Sharks would get their chance for revenge just 2 days later when the 2 teams met yet again this past Friday in the second game of a back to back. Now you would expect that the Sharks would be hungry after the ugly loss that they suffered to start the season, but instead they were once again thoroughly dominated by the Golden Knights who cruised to an even more dominant victory than the first one, this time winning by a margin of 5 - 1.

Now again with a 2 game sample size it is too early to hit the panic button, however it is fair to point out just how terrible the Sharks have been in every facet of the game to kick off the season. Unquestionably the most embarrassing statistic to emerge from the first 2 games of the season for San Jose has been in regards to their effectiveness on the power play. The Sharks power play was abysmal last season with many calling for assistant coach Steve Spott to be fired, but I don't know that anything will ever compare to the numbers the Sharks have produced to start the season. According to San Jose Sharks insider Kevin Kurz the Sharks are a combined -3 on the power play to start the season, no that is not a typo.

Not only have the Sharks failed to produce on the power player this season, they have now allowed an embarrassing 3 short handed goals on the power play just 2 games into the regular season. Unsurprisingly there is once again a segment of the fan base calling for the termination of Steve Spott, however I must admit I am uncertain who is currently responsible for running the Sharks power play this season.

Here's a look at how some fans are reacting to this:

The Sharks are only 6 periods into the regular season which means they have plenty of time to get back on track, however things are certainly looking very ugly for San Jose so far. And for those of you who were wondering when the last time an NHL team scored 3 short handed goals in the first 2 games of the season? It was the Detroit Red Wings all the way back during the 2001 - 2002 NHL regular season.
